guilt trip!

oooh and I just want to thank Matt for commenting on the last couple of posts- it makes this all feel worthwhile :)

building bridges/ opening new doors/ other cliches about new opportunities/ ...everybody's tires

Today was definitely the most exciting day of my internship so far.

Damn I really wish the internet was working earlier when I really felt like writing this blog. Unfortunately, the internet here sucks and my computer has been freaking out the past couple of days. Now I'm all tired and much less excited than I was earlier.

But basically, things are looking up; I can carry this internship over into my senior seminar and then more than likely into a thesis when I go on to get my masters... lots of doors opening and meeting lots of people that would be good to know if I decided to pursue this newest line of interest. I do suppose that's what an internship is all about. But I actually got very excited today about stuff that probably sounds super boring (mapping and compiling a complete list of historic Cherokee villages in NC). I'm just worried that this is nothing more than my latest crazed interest that will phase out within a couple weeks/ a month. Granted, it is a little more specific. I can kind of see where this would take me, school and future-ish wise... I could be a leading expert in something! People would come to be when someone wants to build a sewer line in the middle of nowhere! woooo

Oh, and just so everybody knows- my roommate's name is Lori. yup, it's Lori Link who will be plaguing my existence in Asheville. She seemed nice at first- yeah, sure... maybe a little overly friendly, but not... well, weird... But then I came home yesterday and she let a little of the crazy out. Very nosy, going through my stuff and asking a lot of weird, random questions. Then she compared herself to Bob from the movie What about Bob? (if you haven't seen it, check it out- funny funny), and the thing is- it really isn't so much of a stretch. She really seems like she has done way too many drugs, and she loves, absolutely loves, to talk about what kind of person she is. wooooo maybe I'll give her another chance. I will, since I have to be here for another 7 weeks or something. I'm brought back to the first 3 minutes I met her, when she told me that she would soon be invading every aspect of my life. ~sigh~

whaaaat

Also, I noticed today that I haven't written anything in my quotes document/book in a looooong time. Has this just been a humor-less year? Jeez, somebody say something funny

A Bottle?!

So the title of this blog has absolutely nothing to do with what I wrote about, but I thought a couple of people would appreciate it :) One day I'm going to write a post involving an incident with a bottle, and I will have already used that title up :( Oh well, I'm gonna risk it. That's me, risk-taker extraordinaire.

Wow, I really wish I was less boring. I've been trying to think of what to post for a while. It's a little far into my internship to catch everybody up with the first day, first time I got bored out of my mind, first time I was overwhelmed with the magnitude of the task assigned to me. Plus, most anybody who would read this knows some to most of that stuff anyway (unless I'm talking about it less than I'm thinking about it), and all of the gory details would probably be, well, boring and mundane. I do have a potential idea for this mini-thesis I'll have to be writing in the fall- something about the reactions Cherokee women had to the patrilineal shift in their society at the turn on the 19th century... hmm maybe that makes me sound even more boring :P

I've really been wanting to dazzle everyone at work with my brilliance, to ask really insightful questions and make profound statements that make them stop and say "wow"... Ha but so far all I've been able to do is stare dumbly and stutter over myself. Definitely not impressing anybody. It's amazing how much more well-informed everybody is than me. Or maybe they aren't, but it seems that way because I know so very little.

On another note- WHO PUT THESE PENCILS IN MY HAND???

FIRE!!

So I pull into the apartment complex after work, and as I'm getting out of my car I notice something a little weird. A guy runs past my car to a car a couple spots down, reaches into it, throws something out and then gets in and drives away. All of this he does with an incredible sense of urgency. I think to myself "whatev" and continue to my building. I hear a siren in the background, getting louder... and then I notice a distinct burning smell coming from the building I keep advancing towards.

Oh great.

I walk up the stairs anyway, and run into a couple guys who tell me it's coming from the third floor (right above me). Once I get up that close, it's pretty obvious where it's coming from. As I'm standing there, debating on a course of action, a bunch of firemen/women rush past me. By "rush" I mean clank slowly up the stairs carrying a lot of heavy shit. So what do I do? I let myself into my apartment. In retrospect, that may not have been such a great idea. But at least the whole building didn't burn, taking my measly I'm-only-here-for-two-months belongings with it.

All in all, the past few minutes have been a lot more interesting than the entire first day of my internship. But more about that later- going to work out now!

anna's asheville adventures woooooo

I honestly can't believe I'm starting a blog- something I've always, for as long as I can remember, made fun of. Being in Asheville, bored out of my mind, is apparently enough of a catalyst to get this thing going.
The first night here was weird- I haven't been that lonely in a long time, not even when I moved up to Chapel Hill. And Chapel Hill was a two year commitment, much longer than the mere two month commitment I've made here. I tried not to let the feeling show so much while Griffin was here- it would've made the fact that he had to leave that much harder. I've never really been able to empathize with people vulnerable to homesickness, but maybe it was just because I didn't really have a place I could feel homesick for. And wanting to be back in Charlotte- now that's a bizarre feeling for me. I don't generally like the idea of being in the same city as my father, but I suppose I have built up enough good reasons to be there to be able to feel homesick.

Enough moping- that'll just get boring and angst-ridden posts are what made me despise blogging in the first place.
Matt and I were talking about why people get married- because at least then you have one person tied to you. All your other friends can move away and leave you but that one person won’t, or isn't supposed to in theory. I was thinking- how do people do it? What happens when all your close friends move away? I moved away from my friends once, but not for long, and they were one of the reasons I went back to Charlotte.
I think I felt lonely because two months isn't really enough time to get established in one place, or make bonds with new people. So it's just me, and the mountains of Asheville. So far anyway...

To the people who may read this (I'm thinking maybe 2, or 3...), sorry for the ramble. I'll try to be more interesting in the following posts :)
